Paraphillia

In my Abnormal Psychology class, we were warned in the beginning that there would be required reading that was quite graphic. I knew it would be sexual and I knew I as dreading it. I just got to that point in my semester where this reading was necessary.
The subject was sexual deviations, paraphillias, fetishisms, etc. The chapters always begin with a case study of a patient and follow up through out the chapter. This particular case study was about a 45 year old man who was a pedophile and child rapist. He has raped a 10 year old boy and been convicted. The psychiatrist also had a hard time hearing the details of his case. Child rapists are deemed more violent and take out complete hostility on the child victim. This is compared to child molesters and people who would only use child images to pleasure themselves.
What I learned about paraphillias is not only that they are abnormal but extremely irresistible to the perpetrator. If a man if turned on by a woman and asks her to wear high heel shoes to bed, this is normal. It would become abnormal when he can only be turned on if she wears the shoes while they have sex. And every time they have sex. If he passes a woman on the street wearing high heel shoes, he becomes extremely uncomfortable. He may have an erection and become noticeably agitated. This would be a type of paraphilia and it would interrupt his normal life, to the point it would effect his relationships with others and even his professional life.
This is the problem with pedophiles, infantophilia, hebephilia, ephebophilia, etc. This is not a simple preference or attraction. This is the inability to fight the urge and this is why these people actually engage in this horrific and dangerous activity. The best way to prevent this is to avoid being in situations which make it hard for them to control themselves. This is the opposite of what is likely. These men generally put themselves in to situations like this. They may volunteer where children presence is prevalent. They become boy scout leaders, youth church organizers, etc.
I say men, because it is very rare for a woman to have any paraphilia. There is also very little help that seems to be effective for these individuals. These are the least likely people to seek help for their problems. Most psychiatrists see these people as court mandated sessions. Successful treatments include therapy, hormonal therapy, electroshock therapy, castration etc. Reducing the androgens produced along with testosterone is the best way to decrease the sex drive altogether. Trigger replacement is practiced, where these men are conditioned to change what triggers their sexual excitement by replacing the images of children with images of women or men of the appropriate age. It is either hit or miss, I think depleting the population of these men is the only way to ensure the safety of our children. YES, that means, I believe death penalty for first offense sexual offenders of al children under the age of 14. It is worth it to me, for my children and yours.
